Some of you may have been told about Waterloo Unlimited last year. It is a program for students in grades 10-12, looking for enrichment opportunities in a variety of areas. Each program run by the University of Waterloo is unique and has a different focus.
This year, the programs are as follows:
- grade 12: roadmap to research, november 2009
Students can expect an immersive, pre-university experience including an introduction to the art and science of reading academic papers, an opportunity to explore cutting-edge discoveries with professors from across campus, and the chance to engage with current undergraduate and graduate student researchers.
- grade 11: design, march 2010
From architecture and the environment to science fiction and virtual reality, students will spend a week exploring the theme of Design with a community of like-minded peers.
- grade 10: vision, may 2010
Students will consider the perspectives of scientists, engineers, writers, philosophers, and others as they examine the theme of Vision. From eyesight to imagination and fine art to flight, we're excited about giving students the opportunity to see Vision in a whole new light.
You can check out the link here that has more information about fees, and application due dates. If you are interested, you can register through the school. To do so, please talk to Ms Henry in the special programs [orange] office, a few weeks before the noted deadlines for each grade.

VIBES '09 september 10, 2009
As many of you already know, next Wednesday, EAC is hosting their first event, exclusive for enhanced students at our school. The day will consist of fun ice-breakers to get the enhanced freshman class to get familiar with some of the older enhanced students at the school and some team-building games in the morning to get everyone to know each other. For the afternoon, we thought we would try something new, and also decided to keep it a surprise... for now.
All of you got a sheet in your report card envelope that had VIBES information on it, along with a slip at the bottom. Please get that signed by your parent/guardian before Monday (September 14, which is already about 2 weeks overdue) and have that, along with $10, handed in to Ms Henry to attend. Upon payment, you'll get a reciept which will act as your ticket out of class next Wednesday.
Please note that you will need to notify your teachers of your abscence beforehand (we suggest: tell them this week that you'll be out of class next Wednesday) and show them the receipt you got from Ms Henry.
The $10 you paid will help fund the lunch, activity materials and souvenir t-shirts for the day of the event.
We are also looking for leaders to run some of the activities, and some people to plan. This event is being put on in less that 7 days; any help will be appreciated. Please find Anu or Gautham or Vitheya in the halls, or speak to Ms Henry in the special education [orange] office if you'd like to help out.

second city june 19, 2009
Since a lot of people had fun with last year's EAC's welcoming event with Second City, why not audition to be part of Second City's Teen Troupe?
Teen Troupe is a great opportunity for young performers to study at the world-renowned Second City Training Centre in Toronto, which has produced such talents as Mike Myers (Austin Powers), Jessica Holmes (Air Farce), Neil Crone (Little Mosque on the Prairie) and Teresa Pavlinek (The Jane Show).
The Teen Troupe is 28 weeks of study (Fall and Winter Terms). Classes are once a week, 3 hours per class. In Term 1, students will explore improv, character, and stage craft. In Term 2 the focus will be improv, sketch writing & performance. There will be 2 performances on the Second City Mainstage.
The Teen Troupe will work as an ensemble, so students must be prepared to commit to both terms. Students are expected to be present and on time for classes. There will be some homework in Term 2 as each student is expected to have one completed comedy sketch by the end of the course.
For an audition, submit a photo and resume to The Training Centre in accordance with the dates listed in the Term Schedule. Include a 100 word essay on why you want to be a member of the Teen Troupe. Submissions may be mailed or emailed.

cultural view march 20, 2009
The second annual Cultural View is to be held April 3rd 2009.
Students are invited to attend this interschool event to meet other gifted students from Lorne Park, Glenforest, the Woodlands and Heart Lake for a day of fun-filled multicultural activities. Many Grade eights from surrounding feeder schools will be attending the cultural fair as an introduction to the highschool experience. Humberview is looking forward to seeing many new faces of fellow enhanced students from our region!
As a guest to this event, Humberview's very own Mr. Andrew Cresswell, Head of Social Sciences, will be present. Mr. Cresswell has won numerous awards for his teaching prowess and we are pleased to have him at our school. He will be presenting a small talk on his experiences during the fair. Also, back by popular demand, we have Orlando Bowen, former CFL star will be returning to speak about how culture has affected his life. Mr. Bowen has played for the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tigercats, and we are looking forward to another great speech from him this year.
Students from all the participating high schools were asked earlier this month to submit their registration forms confirming their research topic. Currently, groups of students have selected a variety of cultures, countries and religions to research and present at the Cultural View. Groups are encouraged to bring in a taste of the foods, a sample of music, and styles of art found in that culture to further appreciate the uniqueness of each cultural group in the world.
Each guest school was given an time slot of 10 minutes to present various dances, musical performances, or talents that relate to a particular culture. It is not a talent competition, but a showcase. Entries for Humberview have been submitted, though if interested, students are encouraged to find Miss Anushree Joshi or Ms Henry to get their act in the show. It can be presented individually, or as a group. The talent showcase is a new addition to the Cultural View and with the support of our EAC and the enhanced students at the school, we wish to continue this in years to come.
